The Rambler Special

Whipped cream, chocolate drizzle, espresso. Like the observation car stop — simple, good, remembered.

A palace on wheels — mahogany paneling, brass fittings, velvet seating, a kitchen, a dining room.

The Rambler was Flagler's private railroad car — not a work car, not a sleeper. Built by Jackson & Sharp in 1886 with mahogany paneling, brass fittings, velvet seating, a kitchen, a dining room. Everything the Gilded Age understood about comfort, compressed into something that moved.

Flagler rode The Rambler south on his railroad, arriving in St. Augustine for the Christmas Day 1888 opening of the Hotel Alcazar. He built the hotel; The Rambler carried him there. The two are linked — the car and the destination.

The Rambler Special is the simple, good drink you'd have in the observation car. Not showy. Not complicated. Something you'd remember on a long journey, served by someone who knew what mattered.

The Ingredients

Served hot only. Price set at open.

The drink that earns the name.

The Rambler coffee shop is named for Flagler's railroad car. The Rambler Special is the drink that earns the name. In the courtyard of the hotel that car was built to reach, this is the drink that says: the journey was the point, and you're here now. Simple. Good. Worth stopping for.
